Start with Business Capabilities, Not Technologies 2-8
part 2 of my 8-part series on "Choosing the Right Technology Stack for Your Business Needs."
When selecting your tech stack, begin by mapping the business capabilities you need, then work backward to technologies.
Here's how:
1️⃣ Identify key business processes that need system support
2️⃣ Define current pain points and limitations
3️⃣ Envision ideal future state capabilities
4️⃣ Prioritize capabilities based on business value
5️⃣ Define non-negotiable requirements vs. "nice-to-haves"
For example, if your business capability is "Customer Self-Service" with pain points like limited online options and high call volume, your future requirements might include 24/7 account management and mobile access.
This would point toward technologies like modern web frameworks, responsive design, and secure API architecture.
Remember:
Start with what your business needs to accomplish, not with what technology looks exciting!
This is part 2 of my 8-part series on "Choosing the Right Technology Stack for Your Business Needs." Previously, we explored why tech stack choices matter.
Next up: "Assess Your Organization's Technology Context" - we'll discuss how your current tech landscape influences what stack makes sense.
